Where were you born?

DrMac: In sunny South Africa! I grew up celebrating Christmas by the pool and finding the occasional monkey in our backyard.

DrMeg: I was born right here in Portland, Maine! Even though I spent a “few” years away while attending colleges, I just had to move back so my kids could enjoy the salty air and changing seasons!

How do you mBrace life?

DrMac: Every morning when I wake up I think of three things I’m thankful for. Most mornings these include the family and friends who enrich my days and with whom I spend as much time with as possible. A strong second is my health and my love of running and exploring this amazingly beautiful corner of the world on foot. And lastly, I embrace life with the gratitude that everyday brings new possibilities and another chance to live my life to the fullest.

DrMeg: Life is full of amazing opportunities and people! I live my life with the mindset that we must surround ourselves with what brings us happiness and gives us energy. For me, that is my family, my friends, my passion for giving back to my community and positive attitudes!

Where did you go to school?

DrMac: I started my schooling in South Africa and moved to Massachusetts in 6th grade. I went to Newton South High School and Boston University for college. I found my passion for connecting with and serving people at the University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine and learned to be the best Orthodontist I could be at Tufts University Dental School.

DrMeg: I graduated from Gorham High School (Go Rams!) and then Springfield College in Western Massachusetts. I trained at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine for both my Dental Medicine Degree and Orthodontic Certificate (Go Jumbos!). Finally, I attended Harvard University to complete my Masters in Public Health (Go Crimson!)

What do you do when you aren’t at mBrace Orthodontics?

DrMac: I RUN!! I love to run. I love to travel and hike with my best friend (who happens to be my husband) and my other three besties – my kids. Together we love to explore and to cook and to EAT! I also LOVE teaching and learning with my students at University of New England College of Dental Medicine.

DrMeg: I love to explore new things! My family and I love to travel- whether that means the world or our great state of Maine! I also love to try new restaurants and experiences. Being with my family is my most favorite part of life- together we can be found hiking, running or sailing in the summer or skiing in the winter!

Why are you passionate about Orthodontics?

DrMac: I am passionate about changing smiles and the self confidence a beautiful smile builds. Our smile is the first thing we have to offer the world and the best way to improve someone’s day. What a powerful gift! Our smile is our first communication tool and with a confident smile we feel empowered. As an orthodontist I get to work together with my patients and my team to transform smiles. Every step demands daily effort and support from each of us. I love being a part of the transformation that this teamwork brings. I love seeing the empowerment realized when a seemingly impossible task of renewing a smile is accomplished together! When you are a part of transforming your own smile you feel like anything is possible when you take it one step at a time.

DrMeg: Orthodontics bring me joy in so many ways (yes, I am a tooth nerd and proud of it!). I love watching a smile transform into a positive result that changes a person’s life. As a teenager, I had crooked teeth and very prominent (and large) front teeth! I was self-conscious about that until orthodontics changed my smile and changed my confidence and I LOVE being able to help others feel the same way! I also LOVE LOVE LOVE puzzles and crosswords (I told you I am a nerd) and orthodontics is a type of puzzle- it requires a lot of planning and thought and constant re-evaluation to achieve an amazing and perfect result! So fun!

What are three things you are grateful for?

DrMac:Today? 1)The delicious salmon dish my husband cooked for dinner last night! 2) That my family and my dog, Gus, always have my back and always make me smile 3) This beautiful state we call home

DrMeg: Hmmm only three things? 1.) My family is absolutely number one! They bring a fullness and richness to everyday! 2.) The ability to help others 3.) The ability to enjoy all four seasons in Maine- warm summer sun, beautiful fall colors, fun winter sports and new beginnings each spring!
